Where Saona actually is (and is not)

Saona Island lies off the southeast tip of the Dominican Republic, inside Cotubanama National Park. It is part of La Altagracia province, not the Santo Domingo metropolitan area. The only practical way to visit is by boat from Bayahibe, a small fishing village near La Romana, about 2 to 2.5 hours by road from the capital. Do not confuse Saona with Boca Chica, which is a much closer beach 30 minutes east of Santo Domingo. See our Boca Chica day trip guide if you want a shorter, cheaper alternative.

What to expect on the day

The standard Saona day tour from Santo Domingo runs around 11 hours door to door. Hotel pickup is early, between 6:30 and 7:30 AM. After the long drive east on Autovia del Coral, you arrive at Bayahibe marina around 9:30 AM and board either a speedboat (faster, drier) or a catamaran (slower, with music and bar).

The boats follow the same route. First stop is the natural pool, a shallow sandbank in the middle of the sea where you can stand in waist-deep turquoise water. Starfish live on the sandy bottom but stay in the water, never lift them out, they die in seconds. Then the boat crosses to Saona Island itself, dropping at Mano Juan or Palmilla beach for swimming, palm shade and a buffet lunch served on the sand.

What is included

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off in Santo Domingo or Boca Chica area
  • Round-trip ground transfer Santo Domingo to Bayahibe (about 2.5 hours each way)
  • Boat transfer to Saona, speedboat or catamaran depending on the tour
  • Natural pool stop with rum, soft drinks and time for photos
  • 2 to 3 hours of beach time at Mano Juan or Palmilla
  • Dominican buffet lunch with grilled chicken, fish, rice, salad and fruit
  • National park entrance fee usually included in the tour price

Prices in 2026

From Santo Domingo, group tours start at 70 to 100 USD per person including the long road transfer. Premium catamaran tours with smaller groups and better food run 120 to 160 USD. Children usually pay 50 percent. Booking from Bayahibe directly cuts cost (around 40 to 60 USD) but you have to organize your own transport to the marina.

Best time to go

December to April is high season with the calmest seas and best visibility at the natural pool. May to October can have brief afternoon showers but tours run all year. Avoid full moon weekends if you want a quieter Mano Juan beach. Saturdays bring the largest crowds.

What to bring

  1. Reef-safe sunscreen, biodegradable. The natural pool is a fragile ecosystem
  2. Waterproof phone pouch, essential for the starfish photos
  3. Light rash guard or shirt, the Caribbean sun at midday is brutal
  4. Cash in pesos for tips, the boat crew, lunch staff and driver appreciate it
  5. Motion sickness tablet if you take the speedboat and the sea is choppy
  6. Reusable water bottle, refills are usually included on the boat

Saona vs Catalina vs Boca Chica

Three island day trips compete for attention from Santo Domingo. Saona is the iconic full-day Caribbean experience: longest beach, mangroves, natural pool, but also the longest drive. Catalina Island is closer to Bayahibe and famous for snorkeling on the protected reef wall. Boca Chica is not really an island day trip at all, it is a beach town 30 minutes from the capital, perfect for a half day if you do not want to spend 5 hours on the road.
