TL;DR
  • Duration: about 7 hours for the local trip, and a full 10 hour day for the Saona catamaran
  • Included: mask, snorkel and fins on both. The Saona day adds food and drinks
  • Best for: beginners and anyone who wants warm shallow water rather than a dive certification
  • Book ahead: 3 to 4 days, and a week for any Saturday departure
  • Practical warning: visibility drops for a day or two after heavy rain because the Ozama river pushes silt out to sea

How we ranked this list

We ranked by water clarity where the boat actually stops, then whether gear is included, then review volume and rating, and finally the total time the trip costs you.

  • Where the boat stops first, because the port water in front of the Malecon is not snorkelling water no matter what the listing says
  • Gear included second, since renting a mask separately in Santo Domingo is harder than it sounds
  • Review volume and rating third, treating anything under 10 reviews as thin evidence rather than a bad sign
  • Total time last, because one of these is a half day and the other eats the whole day

What we left out. We left out the dive sites at La Caleta, which are for certified divers and not for a mask and fins. We also left out beach snorkelling at Boca Chica, which is free and needs no booking, so there is nothing for us to compare on price.

Boat snorkeling tours

Reef boat tours are the best way to snorkel in Santo Domingo. Tours typically visit 2-3 reef sites, provide all equipment, and include a guide who points out marine life. Prices start from $90 for a 3-4 hour tour.

Beach snorkeling

If you prefer to snorkel independently, Bavaro Beach and Cabeza de Toro have accessible reefs close to shore. The water is calm and shallow enough for beginners. Snorkel equipment can be rented at beach shops for about $15-20 per day.

What you will see

  • Tropical fish, parrotfish, sergeant majors, angelfish, and more
  • Coral formations, brain coral, fan coral, and elkhorn coral
  • Rays, spotted eagle rays are common on the reefs
